Shizen Design - Black Watercolor Paper
Make metallic watercolors glow against dramatic black cotton rag paper
Metallic and iridescent watercolors need genuine darkness beneath them to reveal their full luminosity. This black paper provides that foundation, not gray-black or off-black, but deep black that makes shimmer pigments pop with maximum contrast. The 100% rag construction absorbs water evenly while maintaining structural integrity through multiple washes and layering. Internal and external sizing controls water absorption, preventing excessive bleeding while allowing pigments to settle into the surface rather than sitting on top.
At 140 lb. (300 gsm), the paper handles wet techniques without buckling or warping. Cold Press delivers textured tooth that catches light differently across the surface, adding dimensional interest to metallic work. Hot Press provides smooth consistency for precise control and even metallic coverage. Handmade production creates subtle variations in each sheet, the kind of character machine-made papers can't replicate.
The 9" × 12" format includes four deckled edges that frame finished work with organic borders. Smaller 5" × 7" sheets come straight-cut, sized perfectly for studies and experimental color mixing. Both formats are 100% recycled and acid-free, ensuring your metallic work won't fade or deteriorate over time.
