Roylco - Rubbing Plates
Transfer intricate patterns onto any surface with these versatile rubbing plates
Traditional crayon rubbing reveals patterns on paper, while direct pressing transfers designs into polymer clay, air-dry clay, or paper mache. Each set includes six different relief patterns that work across multiple techniques and materials.
The rigid plates maintain consistent depth and definition through repeated use. Position paper over the surface and stroke with crayon held sideways, the raised pattern emerges as color catches only the high points. For dimensional work, press clay directly against the plate and lift away to reveal the impressed texture. This direct transfer method works particularly well for creating repeating patterns on handbuilt ceramics or adding surface interest to sculptural forms.
Young artists develop observational skills by discovering how different rubbing pressures and crayon angles affect pattern clarity. The plates work equally well for quick texture studies and finished artwork. Educators appreciate how rubbing plates introduce printmaking concepts, relief surfaces, positive and negative space, pattern repetition, through immediate, tactile exploration. Suitable for ages four and up, though technique sophistication grows with the artist.
