Liquitex - Acrylic Crackle Paste

Acrylic Crackle Paste

Create dimensional cracks that won't chip or flake off your canvas

Crackle effects develop naturally as this paste dries, creating authentic-looking fissures without requiring heat guns or careful timing. Apply Liquitex Crackle Paste in thick layers, up to half an inch, and the surface tension creates irregular cracks as moisture evaporates, mimicking aged surfaces or adding dimensional texture to abstract compositions. The paste maintains structural integrity once cured, resisting flaking or separation even when applied heavily.

Mix acrylic paint directly into the paste for colored crackle effects, or apply color after cracking completes for contrast between surface and depths. The paste works best on rigid supports like wood panels, canvas boards, or heavyweight watercolor paper; flexible surfaces may cause the dried paste to separate. Crack patterns vary with application thickness and environmental conditions, thicker applications produce wider, more dramatic fissures while thinner layers create fine surface crazing.

Use this paste for distressed finishes on mixed media assemblages, textured grounds beneath subsequent painting layers, or as the primary surface treatment itself. The dried surface accepts additional acrylic layers, allowing you to build complex, weathered effects or integrate crackle areas into larger compositions.
