Grumbacher - Stand Oil

Stand Oil

Build custom mediums that level perfectly and resist yellowing

Polymerized linseed oil flows like honey and transforms how oil paint behaves. This thickened medium increases gloss and color intensity while creating smoother, more flexible paint films that resist yellowing better than raw linseed oil. The molecular structure changes during heat treatment make stand oil level beautifully, eliminating brushstrokes for enamel-smooth surfaces in glazing and fine detail work.

The extra-heavy body requires thinning before use; mix with turpentine or another solvent to achieve workable consistency, or combine with damar varnish and solvent to create traditional painting mediums. Small amounts go far, stand oil's concentrated nature means you control viscosity precisely while maintaining its beneficial properties. This approach prevents the overly slick, unmanageable paint that results from adding undiluted stand oil directly to colors.

Grumbacher bottles this medium in 2.5-ounce quantities that last through multiple painting sessions. The clearer formulation means less color shift in your mixtures compared to standard linseed oil, particularly valuable when working with whites and pale tints where any yellowing becomes immediately visible.
