Handcrafted charcoal delivers velvety blacks that blend seamlessly for portraits
Handcrafted charcoal pencils deliver the rich, velvety blacks that make dramatic portraits and still life studies come alive on paper. General's builds these with extra-smooth organic charcoal that glides across surfaces without scratching, creating intense darks that blend seamlessly with stumps or fingers. The oil-free formula prevents unwanted shine while maintaining the deep matte finish charcoal work demands.
These pencils adapt easily across techniques and surfaces. Layer them for atmospheric depth in landscape sketches, or press hard for bold contours in figure drawing. The same formula that blends beautifully for tonal work also transfers cleanly onto canvas, making these useful for pattern application and direct canvas drawing before painting. Wood casings protect the charcoal core while allowing controlled sharpening for both broad strokes and fine details.
Available individually to replace your most-used grades or build a custom set around your preferred darkness levels. Order twelve for a complete box, or grab the two-pack for quick replacement of studio essentials. Whether you're working through fundamental drawing exercises or developing finished charcoal renderings, these pencils provide the responsiveness and intensity that makes charcoal such an immediate, expressive medium.
