Scraping through black ink to reveal pure white beneath creates contrast impossible to achieve with drawing alone. Essdee's scraperboard starts with a heavy china clay coating that produces an exceptionally smooth surface, then adds dense black ink over top. This construction lets you work in remarkably fine detail, scratch tools glide through the ink layer cleanly, exposing crisp white lines without the ragged edges or resistance you'd get from inferior boards.
The extreme tonal range between deep black and brilliant white gives scraperboard illustrations their distinctive graphic punch.
