Handmade rag paper holds washes without buckling through multiple layers
Rag fibers and recycled content don't usually coexist in premium watercolor paper, but Shizen combines both without compromising performance. Each sheet is handmade from 100% cotton rag that's also 100% recycled, an unusual pairing that delivers archival quality while addressing environmental concerns. Internal and external sizing penetrates the paper structure completely, allowing both wet-on-wet techniques and precise dry-brush control without buckling or pilling.
At 140 lb. (300 gsm), this paper handles aggressive washes and repeated lifting. Cold Press surfaces provide moderate tooth for granulating pigments and textural effects; Hot Press delivers smooth surfaces suited to botanical illustration and detailed work requiring minimal texture interference.
