US Art Quest Mica Flakes Description

Natural mica splits into delicate, irregular flakes that catch light differently than manufactured glitter, more organic shimmer, less disco ball. These pigment-coated tiles maintain their metallic luster indefinitely without the tarnishing that plagues metal leaf or metallic powders, making them reliable for archival work and pieces meant to last.

The flakes work with practically any adhesive system you're already using: acrylic medium, gel medium, varnish, PVA, even rubber cement for temporary applications. Press them into wet medium for embedded texture, or dust them onto tacky surfaces for lighter coverage. Their irregular shapes and varying thicknesses create dimensional surfaces that shift as viewing angles change. Heat resistance means they survive encaustic work and heat embossing without degrading, try sprinkling them onto embossing powder while it's still molten for combined metallic effects.

Collage artists layer them for textural contrast. Papermakers embed them during sheet formation. Mixed media work benefits from their ability to bridge between painted and dimensional surfaces. Individual 1 oz. tubes let you stock colors you use repeatedly, while the four-jar sets provide curated palettes: traditional metallics for classic shimmer, or the jewel-toned collection for richer color effects. The small 3g jars in sets make testing color combinations practical before committing to larger quantities.
