Blend charcoal and pastel to perfection with precise, cleanable points

Tightly wound paper forms a firm point that pushes graphite and charcoal into paper grain rather than just smearing pigment across the surface. This compression creates smooth, controlled gradations while maintaining the density you've already built into shadows and mid-tones. Unlike foam blending tools that lift and redistribute material unevenly, tortillions work pigment deeper into texture, preserving value relationships while eliminating visible strokes.

The tapered design lets you work from broad transitions down to precise edge refinements with the same tool. Small tortillions (1/4" × 2 7/8") handle tight details and small drawings; medium (5/16" × 3 1/8") covers most general blending work; large (3/8" × 3 5/8") manages broader areas in larger compositions. When a tip becomes saturated with pigment, tear away the outer layer to expose fresh paper underneath, no need to stop working or switch tools mid-blend.

Richeson's tight winding prevents the paper from unraveling during aggressive blending sessions. The assorted 6-pack includes two of each size, letting you discover which dimensions suit your drawing scale and technique before committing to larger quantities. Graphite artists appreciate how these maintain crisp edges while softening transitions; pastelists value the control they provide over chalky surfaces.
