Layer metallic depth that shifts color as viewers move around your work
Mica-based pigments create optical effects impossible with standard pigments alone. Golden's Iridescent and Interference lines use this principle to produce colors that shift, shimmer, and flip depending on light angle and viewing position. Understanding how each type works helps you choose the right effect for your surface.
Iridescent colors contain reflective mica particles that catch light like pearl or metal. Fine Iridescents blend smoothly into glazes and mixed colors, adding subtle shimmer without disrupting your paint handling. Coarse versions pack larger mica flakes, including actual stainless steel and gold particles, that create dramatic sparkle and texture. Both resist fading and won't tarnish like metallic pigments, maintaining their reflective quality permanently. Iridescent Pearl functions as a mixer, lending pearl-like luminosity to any color without shifting its hue.
Interference colors work differently: they flip between complementary opalescent colors as viewing angle changes. Over white surfaces, you'll see pronounced color shifts with subtle base color. Over black, the base color dominates while the flip becomes more restrained. Adding tiny amounts of black to Interference colors deepens their opalescent quality. These effects combine readily with Golden's gels and Fluid Acrylics, letting you adjust both the optical behavior and working consistency.
All formulas use Golden's 100% acrylic polymer emulsion, which dries crystal-clear to let the optical pigments perform without interference. The resulting films flex without cracking while resisting water, chemicals, and UV degradation.
