Beeswax and alkyd resin combine in this medium to transform oil paint handling and surface quality. Cold Wax Medium builds body without the gloss, mix it into colors for thick, matte applications that hold their shape, or work it pure between layers for translucent veils and encaustic-like effects. The alkyd component accelerates drying compared to straight wax, while Gamsol evaporation firms the surface without requiring heat or special equipment.
Compatibility across Gamblin's system opens substantial mixing options. Galkyd increases tack for aggressive mark-making; Galkyd Gel maintains body while adding subtle sheen. Galkyd Lite Gel softens the texture, smoothing impasto peaks into more refined surfaces. Adding straight Gamsol thins the medium for fluid applications while preserving the matte finish. This flexibility lets you adjust working properties to match technique, from thick palette knife work to delicate glazing layers.
Applied as a final varnish, Cold Wax Medium unifies surface sheen into soft, velvety finish that eliminates glare without the plastic appearance of traditional varnishes. Available in 118ml for testing mixtures and 500ml for sustained studio work.
