Damar resin dissolved in citrus solvent creates a removable final varnish that protects oil paintings without the harsh fumes of turpentine-based alternatives. Eco-House combines Indonesian damar with citrus peel oil in near-equal proportions, adding a small amount of linseed stand oil for flexibility in the dried film. This formulation matters because traditional damar varnishes can crack over time; the stand oil component increases elasticity to help prevent this common problem.
The glossy finish intensifies colors and unifies surface sheen across your painting, bringing depth to darks and luminosity to mixed passages. Citrus solvent evaporates more slowly than mineral spirits, giving you adequate working time to brush varnish evenly across large canvases without lap marks. The surface dries to touch within 12 to 24 hours depending on ambient conditions and application thickness.
Because damar remains soluble in mild solvents even after drying, conservators can remove this varnish layer years later without disturbing original paint. Apply over thoroughly dry oil paintings, at least six months cure time for standard techniques, longer for heavy impasto. The natural citrus base makes studio varnishing sessions considerably more pleasant than working with petroleum distillates.
