Amaco - Underglaze Pencils
Draw intricate ceramic designs with pencil-like precision and control
Bisque ware demands different tools than paper. These underglaze pencils deliver concentrated color that bonds to fired clay surfaces, enabling precise line work and shading techniques impossible with brushes alone. The reformulated pigments provide richer color intensity while maintaining the control that makes pencils indispensable for detailed ceramic decoration.
Apply directly to bisqueware for everything from delicate botanical illustrations to bold graphic designs. The underglaze responds to varied pressure, creating value gradations from subtle shading to saturated marks. After drawing, dust away excess particles with a soft brush before glazing. When applying your first coat of clear glaze, sponge it on gently to avoid smearing your design, subsequent coats can go on more aggressively. If you're spraying, dipping, or pouring your glaze, skip the careful first coat and proceed normally.
Fire to the temperature required by your covering glaze. The underglaze design remains crisp and protected beneath the transparent finish. One critical difference from graphite pencils: never use a standard pencil sharpener. The ceramic core requires sharpening with a knife or blade to maintain the point without crumbling. This small adjustment in technique unlocks precise detail work that distinguishes accomplished ceramic decoration from amateur attempts.
