Aitoh - Shadow Watercolors
Paint with luminous blacks that reveal subtle color undertones as layers build
Traditional Japanese bone glue forms the foundation of these watercolors, a binding method refined over twelve centuries of sumi ink production. This ancient technique creates remarkably even flow across paper while maintaining exceptional lightfast properties that resist fading over time. The glue binding produces deep, saturated blacks with subtle color undertones, reddish, yellowish, greenish, bluish, purplish, and brownish variations that add dimensional depth to monochromatic work.
Each color arrives in its own ceramic pan, protecting the pigment while providing the weight and stability serious watercolorists appreciate. The Ezumi set offers six muted blacks perfect for atmospheric studies, ink wash techniques, and subtle tonal gradations. The Mei set shifts toward vibrant primaries and secondaries, pink, yellow, green, blue, purple, and vermilion, while maintaining the distinctive shadow quality that gives these watercolors their name.
Aitoh's modern production methods preserve traditional binding techniques, resulting in watercolors that behave like classic Japanese ink yet expand your palette beyond pure black. Whether building layered washes or working wet-into-wet, these colors maintain their intensity without muddying or separating on the page.
