Used wet, the slurry rinses away continuously rather than loading the abrasive surface, which matters when you're working through multiple primer coats or smoothing varnish between applications. Silicon carbide's friable nature means it fractures to expose fresh cutting edges rather than dulling into uselessness.
Grit selection determines your surface preparation outcome: 320 smooths glaze and spot putty to ready surfaces for subsequent coats; 400 scuffs those same materials before primer, particularly effective with aerosol applications; 600 refines primer surfaces before color coats and feathers blend areas to invisible transitions.
