Protects finished oils with traditional high-gloss depth and richness
Oil paintings need protection once they've fully cured, and damar resin dissolved in turpentine has served this purpose for centuries. Grumbacher Damar Varnish creates a clear, glossy barrier between your paint film and environmental threats, dust accumulation, airborne pollutants, moisture changes, and physical contact. This traditional formulation deepens color saturation and brings forward the richness that develops during the drying process, particularly noticeable in darker passages and transparent glazes.
Apply only after oil paint has completely oxidized, typically six to twelve months after finishing. Premature varnishing traps solvents beneath the surface and prevents proper curing. The high-gloss finish intensifies visual depth while the protective layer means you can safely clean the varnish surface without touching actual paint. Damar remains removable with appropriate solvents, allowing conservators or experienced artists to refresh varnish layers decades later without damaging underlying work.
The 2.5-ounce bottle covers multiple small to medium paintings. Work in dust-free conditions and apply thin, even coats with a soft brush to avoid trapped bubbles or streaking.
