Royal & Langnickel - Artist Chamois

Artist Chamois

Blend and soften charcoal or pastel with natural chamois leather

Select chamois leather maintains its soft, pliable texture through countless blending sessions without deteriorating or leaving residue on your work. This natural material excels at smoothing graphite, charcoal, and pastel surfaces, lifting excess pigment while distributing what remains into even, graduated tones that synthetic tools can't quite replicate. The irregular surface texture creates varied effects depending on how you fold, bunch, or stretch the leather across your drawing.

At 5 × 7 inches, this chamois provides enough working area to blend large passages yet tears easily into smaller pieces for targeted work. Fold it into a pad for broad strokes across backgrounds, or wrap it around your finger for controlled blending in confined areas. The natural oils in genuine chamois skin prevent it from becoming stiff or scratchy with use, though you can refresh it with light washing when it becomes saturated with pigment.

Keep one chamois dedicated to each medium to prevent color contamination between projects. Graphite artists particularly value how chamois creates smooth transitions between values without the directional marks that tortillons or stumps often leave behind.
