The beads themselves are industrial glass, uniform in size and spherical enough to create consistent optical effects. Golden suspends them in an acrylic medium that dries clear, maintaining the beads' reflective quality without yellowing or clouding over time. The gel applies smoothly with brush or palette knife, though the beads add subtle texture that influences how subsequent layers behave.
Mix Glass Bead Gel with enough paint to obscure the beads completely, and you get texture similar to Coarse Pumice Gel, useful when you need that rough surface quality without the matte finish pumice provides. But the real value lies in those thin, translucent applications: glazing over the beads, letting them peek through transparent color, building atmospheric effects in landscapes or creating subtle surface interest in abstracts.
