R & F Handmade Paints - Encaustic Medium
Build luminous glazes while keeping your encaustic surface bloom-free
Pure beeswax alone creates problems in encaustic work, films stay soft and develop cloudy bloom in cold temperatures. R&F's medium solves this by combining refined beeswax with damar resin, maintaining the hardness and clarity that proper encaustic technique requires. This translucent medium extends pigmented colors without compromising film integrity, letting you build transparent layers and subtle glazes while preserving archival stability.
The damar resin raises the melting point and hardens the wax, preventing the frustrating bloom that appears when pure beeswax cools. Once bloom develops, you're stuck reheating and reworking, the medium eliminates this issue entirely. Use it to create luminous transparencies, adjust color intensity without changing hue, or establish clear protective layers between painted passages.
R&F formulates this medium to match the working properties of their pigmented paints exactly, ensuring consistent fusion and handling across your palette. Available in multiple sizes to suit different working scales, from detailed studio work to large installations where you're mixing substantial quantities of extended color.
